He had said after the May attempt that it would still be well worth the time and money to figure it out.Īnd he noted earlier this year that the first-stage rocket booster makes up about 80% of the cost of a brand-new rocket, so figuring out how to safely capture and reuse them after launch would save the company a bundle of cash. “Our first helicopter catch only a few months ago proved we can do what we set out to do with Electron, and we’re eager to get the helicopter back out there and advance our rocket reusability even further by bringing back a dry stage for the first time,” Beck said in a statement ahead of Friday’s launch. After the first attempt, in May, the hook-wielding helicopter did successfully snag the rocket midair only for the pilots to intentionally drop it moments later because of safety concerns. This event marked the company’s second attempt to use its newly devised helicopter-catch method. Rocket Lab catches, then drops booster in helicopter capture attempt Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck has noted that it’s preferable to catch the rocket midair to keep it dry. In fact, we’ve performed several of them across our missions to date, and most recently we were able to re-fire a Rutherford engine that had been returned from the ocean,” Baker added. “If we did that today that would not be a failure for our recovery program. “We will bring you updates on that ocean operation in the hours to come. ![]() “We do have the backup option of an ocean splashdown,” Baker said. In a tweet, the company reported that there was a data loss issue during the rocket’s reentry. The pilot of the helicopter had just about 10 minutes from the time the booster’s parachute deployed to attempt to swoop in for the capture, said Murielle Baker, Rocket Lab’s communications manager, on the launch live stream.īut the rocket never came into view, and Baker confirmed on the live stream that the helicopter pilots said the booster wouldn’t be returning to the factory dry. Rocket Lab positioned a modified Sikorsky S-92 helicopter to intercept it mid-descent, aiming to snag the booster by its strings. Then, after the rocket’s first-stage booster - the tallest, bottommost portion of the rocket that gives the initial thrust at liftoff - finished firing and detached from the rocket’s second stage, it began plummeting back toward Earth and deployed a parachute to slow its descent. The spacecraft carried a science research satellite to orbit for the Swedish National Space Agency. The company’s $7.5 million Electron rocket took off from its launch site in southern New Zealand at 1:27 p.m. The primary mission goal hit its mark without a hitch. The wild spectacle is all part of the company’s plans to save money by recovering and reusing rocket parts after they vault satellites to space. The company deployed a helicopter with a hook attachment, but it wasn’t able to catch the booster. By contrast, the still-in-development Starship is the world's most powerful rocket and is designed to eventually take astronauts to the moon and Mars.Rocket Lab, a start-up building small orbital rockets, kicked off another successful mission on Friday - but it failed in its efforts to recapture its rocket booster as it tumbled down toward Earth. SpaceX's Falcon rocket has become a workhorse in the industry and is used by governments and companies. ![]() SpaceX and Rocket Lab produce rockets that send payloads, such as satellites, into orbit. ![]() "When presented this reality, most satellite companies expressed their reluctance to being over reliant on certain launch companies, namely SpaceX." "Fast forward to 2023, and there are truly only two launch companies that have proven consistent and reliable operations, only one of which is publicly traded Rocket Lab," analysts wrote. Just a few years ago, several launch companies were coming to market, raising expectations they would lower costs and make space more accessible, according to a Bank of America note. Although the SpaceX Starship exploded Thursday during its first attempt to reach orbit, Elon Musk's space company remains a top provider of launch services in what once looked to be a more crowded field. ![]() Dogs were selected to perform specific tasks-which never was the case for cats-and this selection for particular traits is what led to dogs’ diversification to the many breeds we see today. This is in contrast to dogs, the first animals to be domesticated, Geigl adds. ![]() (See " Our Most Stunning Pictures of Big Cats.") Domestic cats look similar to wildcats, but they aren’t solitary, tolerating both humans and other cats. Overall, cats became a domesticated companion of humans without changing much, says evolutionary geneticist and article coauthor Eva-Maria Geigl. It was only in the 18th century, however, that the markings became common enough to be associated with domestic cats, and in the 19th century, cat fanciers began selecting cats with particular traits to create fancy breeds. The gene for a tabby coat dates back to the Ottoman Empire in Southwest Asia and later became common in Europe and Africa. The study sheds light on the late emergence of the blotched or striped coat markings, which began to appear in domesticated tabby cats in the Middle Ages. Surprisingly, wild and domestic cats showed no major differences in their genetic makeup, and one of the few traits available for telling them apart was the tabby coat marking. Tabby Takeoverīy comparing the DNA of cats throughout history, the study captures a glimpse of how the animals were changing even before humans started to cart them across the globe, Ottoni says. The results suggest that prehistoric human populations probably began carrying their cats along ancient land and sea trade routes to control rodents. This Egyptian cat probably had behaviors that made it attractive to humans, such as sociability and tameness. However, one resident has made it her mission to look after Jerusalem's strays and give them the best life possible.Ī second lineage, consisting of African cats that dominated Egypt, spread into the Mediterranean and most of the Old World beginning around 1500 B.C. ![]() (Also see “ Surprising Things You Never Knew About Your Cat.”)Ĭat overpopulation threatens the well-being of felines in the Old City of Jerusalem, leaving them susceptible to disease, neglect, and starvation. Instead, people more or less allowed cats to domesticate themselves. “It’s not that humans took some cats and put them inside cages,” he says. “This is probably how the first encounter between humans and cats occurred,” says study coauthor Claudio Ottoni of the University of Leuven. Cats likely followed the rodent populations and, in turn, frequently approached the human settlements. Mice and rats were attracted to crops and other agricultural byproducts being produced by human civilizations. (See little-known small cats in “ Out of the Shadows, the Wildcats You’ve Never Seen.”) The cats likely started hanging around farming communities in the Fertile Crescent about 8,000 years ago, where they settled into a mutually beneficial relationship as humans’ rodent patrol. The earlier ancestors of today’s domestic cats spread from southwest Asia and into Europe as early as 4400 B.C. All three (or four – if you add the second side of the two-sided poster) of these posters were 24″ x 32″, which is not a common poster size. (The poster with Aragorn is actually two-sided, so I got two of them.) Then there was another The Return of the King poster with Gollum that was available from Target with the purchase of the #9476 LEGO Lord of the Rings Orc Forge set – which I also got from eBay. The Two Towers poster (with Legolas), along with The Return of the King poster (with Aragorn) were available with a LEGO Lord of the Rings set purchase, and later by themselves from Toys’R’Us and FAO Schwartz. The Fellowship of the Ring poster (with Frodo) was a limited edition with only 5,000 made, that you could get with any LEGO Lord of the Rings set purchase at LEGO stores or the Online LEGO Shop. Then there are the posters related to the release of the LEGO Lord of the Rings sets in 2012. I got one off of eBay from an international seller. ![]() I believe only the poster for the regular version of the movie was printed, but I don’t know where it was originally available. ![]() There are two posters related to the movie one is a LEGO-ized version of the original poster, and the other is for the 3D version. The next LEGO movie posters were for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, to coincide with the release of the 3D version of the film in 2012. However I do have pictures of the posters next to the original ones in my flickr gallery. I don’t have these because they were released before I became serious about collecting them, and I believe that they were even more limited than normal. The first printed movie poster remakes that I’m aware of are related to the Indiana Jones line ( Raiders of the Lost Arc, Last Crusade, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) from 2008-2009, when the LEGO Indiana Jones sets became available. ![]() As I have mentioned, Brad is an avid collector of these LEGO movie posters. Below I will post the information he shared with me, and you can also visit his flickr gallery for all the LEGO movie posters. And another interesting part is to be able to find these posters, as they tend to be quite elusive some of them may actually have never been available in a printed format (so it was just art-work used digitally) and even the ones that were printed are usually only available as a promotional item tied to the release of the new film and/or the new LEGO sets related to the film. The most interesting and fun part of these posters is that they are recreations of the official movie posters related to the release of a new film – so they will include minifig versions of the characters and actors in the same settings and with the same poses as on the original poster. Besides official LEGO sets related to the movies, they also started offering promotional posters. ![]() LEGO has been collaborating with various movie franchises for several years now. He preferred not to do it himself, however he suggested I use the information we talked about to put together a post, then if readers have other questions he can answer them. The information he shared was so interesting that I suggested he writes an article. I was talking with one of our long-time readers, Brad, who is a collector of official LEGO movie posters. ![]() In this video, learn how to remove anything from a photo, no matter how obstru Adobe. The results of this study provided useful information on the utilization of ion exchange resins as release modifiers in matrix systems. EC-based matrices containing either resin displayed a propensity for disintegration caused by swelling and wicking (water adsorption) actions by the resin. However, Am64 could retard drug release under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Dow88 strongly dissociated and lowered the drug release to a greater extent than Am64, which was weakly dissociated. In deionized water, both resins lowered drug release from HPMC-based matrices by virtue of the gelation property of matrix former and the drug exchange property of embedded resin, in other words in situ resinate formation. In contrast, the addition of Am64 increased matrix hardness and maintained the original thickness, diameter, and friability. The addition of Dow88 to the matrices decreased matrix hardness and increased thickness, diameter, and friability. The matrices were prepared by direct compression of Methocel K4M (HPMC) or Ethocel 7FP (EC) polymeric matrix formers and contained diphenhydramine hydrochloride as a model drug. This study focused on investigating and comparing between the effect of the strongly cationic exchange resin, Dowex 88 (Dow88), and the weakly cationic exchange resin, Amberlite IRP64 (Am64), on the physical properties of matrices and their drug release profiles. |
